HELPFUL GUIDELINES FOR LIVING WITH A HOST FAMILY
We understand that it can be difficult for a candidate to get used to living with a different family. Equally, remember that it is also difficult for the family to get used to someone new in the home.
The following are points to assist you in settling into a new household. This is a general outline only and will vary from family to family.
Be smiling, helpful and trustworthy. You will feel lonely and homesick at first, missing your friends and family. Remember, however, that the 'new' family knows this.
-Try to join in with the family in the same way that the family welcomes you. Respect the privacy of the family and they will respect yours.
-Personal cleanliness and hygiene are important. Bathe regularly and ensure that your clothes are kept clean, especially when handling babies. Enquire when you may use the washing machine.
-If you do not feel well tell your employer.
-Keep your own bedroom clean and tidy. It is your responsibility to look after the family's home and possessions in the same way that you would your own. Do not take anything without asking. You might be expected to buy your own personal goods e.g. toothpaste, soap, toiletries etc.
-Always appear in the morning dressed and washed etc. ready for work. Please make sure that you have an alarm clock.
-Make quite sure that you fully understand what is expect of you. Your hours of work and your time/days off etc. Do not be shy to ask the family to repeat it if you are not clear
-If you do have any questions about what to do in the home, or with the children ASK. It is easier to ask than to keep things inside of you which may create a bad atmosphere in the home.
-If making coffee etc. for yourself always offer to others. Remember they are offering you their home.
-Always remember to wash-up and tidy away after you have eaten. Never leave your dirty cup, saucer etc. in the sink for others to wash. At family mealtimes always wash-up, or help with the washing-up and clearing away.
-Eating habits vary in different homes. Respect the wishes of the family and do not take food into the house which you know is forbidden by their religion or customs. Eat with the family as offered or, if making your own meal, ASK what you can or cannot use. If you use a lot of something of which the family only uses a little, replace it yourself. Do not take food to your room or out of the house without permission.
-Take CLEAR telephone messages if asked by the family.
-When you leave the house ensure electrical equipment is turned off and doors and windows are locked.
-Do not stay out all night or entertain boyfriends in the house. Ask if you may bring your friend's home. Remember that you are the responsibility of the family whilst living in their home. If you wish to stay out late, let them know.
-NEVER keep personal records of yourself and your host family on internet web/chat pages.
-Ensure that you have a contact number when being left in sole charge of the children. Never give any medicines to the children without explicit instructions to do so.
-Contact Choices Direct Ltd with your new phone number as soon as you have it so that we can keep in contact with you.
